well, we're developing a difficult intubation add-on for our HPS simulator. Normally we would use airway occlusion, laryngospasm and tongue swelling to facilitate a difficult intubation but due to the tongue repeatedly puncturing we decided to look at something else. currently developing an airway occluder to the front of the trachea but it needs a bit of fine tuning, but just wondered if anyone out there has developed something similar for a METI simulator or other simulator and cares to share? We will post our pics and findings once we have a reliably working reusable model.

well proof of concept done, it appears to work. Next step, fine tune the prototype and start using in scenarios. i feel another abstract submission coming along

abstract submission done, will work up a word document to share here, might be something that can be used on other manikins or even adapted for something totally different

so this abstract was accepted for the upcoming SCSN ASPiH Symposium, so i guess after I've presented that i'll post details of this simple idea here

so lots of interest in the device/add-on, excited that CAE took an interest in it too. seems a common problem with HPS users and the device will be replicated on HPS manikins and possibly intubation heads, by centre staff throughout Europe

so here's a snapshot from the video we shot yesterday, with 2 images side by side, the left image is the view whilst intubating HPS under normal conditions, the image on the right is the view whilst attempting to intubate HPS with our difficult intubation device installed and active

now it's time to expand and see if we can adapt this concept to work on airway management trainers too, looks highly likely, supply of bouncy balls arrived today, guess what i'm doing tomorrow ?

I'd love to try this in the airway management trainers. Let us know how you get on.

might need a bit more work, when i took ours apart the airway was ruptured, we knew we had a leak but the sections of airway were coming apart from each other, purely down to age and use i think.
